When you talk to a girl while having the Love Ring equipped you can see how far along you are with her Love Points. The other 5 'Normal' girls that were Bachelorettes in the boy version of the game are now your Rivals, and they will try to aquire the love of the 5 'Normal' boys around the valley. To acquire a Best Friend you have to go through the Heart Events for either Keria, Leia, Goddess, or the Witch. A Best Friend will even give you a gift on your Birthday, If you want a Best Friend you won't be able to choose to have a male husband later. One of the special girls from the boy version can become your own closest friend. The BF system allows you to have a Best Friend instead of a husband.
In Harvest Moon DS Cute, the 4 'Special' girls that were normally available to marry in the boy version are now available to become your best friend.
